Peter German
Peter German QC, PhD, is the founder and principal of Peter German & Associates Inc., and the President of the International Centre for Criminal Law Reform. A lawyer and member of the Ontario and British Columbia bars, he was previously a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, serving as its Deputy Commissioner for Western and Northern Canada. He was also Regional Deputy Commissioner Pacific for Correctional Service Canada. His academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) (MtA), Master of Arts (SFU), Juris Doctor (UNB), Master of Laws (UBC) and Ph.D. in Law (London). His doctoral dissertation focused on recovering the assets of grand corruption. He is the author of Proceeds of Crime and Money Laundering, published by Thomson Reuters, the only current service in this area of criminal law in Canada.
Dr. German served in various capacities within the RCMP, including general duties, security and intelligence, professional standards, but primarily in the investigation and management of financial crime. This included as a Detective Inspector engaged on corruption investigations in the national capital and as the RCMP’s national Director General of Financial Crime. During his tenure, integrated market enforcement, counterfeit and international investigation teams were developed. He also served as Canada’s initial team commander in the 2008 search for kidnapped Canadian diplomats in West Africa. His work with the Force included liaising with most U.S. federal law enforcement agencies, as well as forces in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. His honours and awards include Queen’s Counsel, Officer of the Order of Merit of Police Forces, the Queen Elizabeth II Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medals, the Gold Medal of the International Society for the Reform of Criminal Law, and Queen’s Counsel and the RCMP Long Service Medal with silver bar. He is a Life Member of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
